How Often Should You Refresh Your Video and Photography?

You’ve invested in professional media.

The photos look sharp, the video feels fresh, and it captures your brand perfectly.

But here’s the question we’re always asked by clients, how long does it last?

Do you need new footage every year, every few months, or only when your business changes?

The answer depends on how your brand is evolving and how your audience sees you.

Even the best content has a shelf life, and staying relevant is what keeps your brand growing.

Your Brand Changes Faster Than You Think No business stands still.

Your team grows, your services shift, and your audience’s expectations move on too.

The problem is that outdated visuals don’t just look old. They send the wrong message.

If your video still features people who have left the company, an office you no longer use, or branding that has since changed, it instantly dates your business.

It can make even the strongest brands feel stuck in the past.

That is why keeping your photography and video up to date isn’t vanity, it's maintenance.

Think of Media Like Your Website

Your visuals are part of your digital shop window. You wouldn’t leave your website untouched for five years, so why do the same with your content?

Your photos and videos are how people experience your brand before they meet you.

They should reflect what you look like now, not what you looked like then. If your visuals aren’t matching up with your story, it creates confusion.

People lose trust, even if they can’t explain why.

So, How Often Should You Refresh Your Media?

There’s no single rule for everyone, but here’s a general guide based on what we see across industries:

  • Every 12 to 18 months if your business is evolving steadily and your brand visuals still align.

  • Every 6 to 12 months if you are in a fast-moving space like hospitality, attractions, or retail.

  • Every 2 to 3 years if your product or brand identity is long-established and your visuals still perform well.

The key is to refresh before your content starts to feel old.

By the time you notice it’s dated, your audience already has too.

Look for These Signs It’s Time to Update

You don’t always need a big reshoot to keep things fresh, but you do need to spot when it’s time. Here are a few simple red flags to look out for:

  • The visuals no longer match your tone. If your photography looks corporate but your brand now feels creative and open, it’s time for an update.

  • The content isn’t performing. If engagement on your website, ads, or socials has dropped, your visuals might not be resonating anymore.

  • You’ve had a rebrand or new service launch. A new colour palette, logo, or tagline means your visuals need to follow suit.

  • It doesn’t represent your team. People want to see the real humans behind a business. If your video still features faces that aren’t part of the company, it’s time to reshoot.

  • It just feels flat. Trust your gut. If your visuals don’t excite you anymore, they probably won’t inspire your audience either.

Make It Easier and Build a Media Plan

Rather than waiting until your visuals are outdated, create a simple annual or biannual plan.

That could mean a main shoot once a year, supported by smaller quarterly top-ups such as new team photos, updated product shots, or short social clips.

This keeps your content relevant, consistent, and cost-effective. It also helps you plan ahead so you can align shoots with campaigns, seasonal trends, or big announcements.

Your video and photography are some of your most powerful storytelling tools, but even the best content loses its impact over time.

Refreshing your media isn’t about chasing trends.

It’s about staying honest and consistent with who you are today.

When your visuals match your brand’s current story, everything works better.

Your website feels more credible, your social content feels more engaging, and your marketing feels more alive.

So, ask yourself, does your media still reflect your business today, or the business you used to be?

If it’s the latter, it’s time for a refresh.
